Vw Does Not Only Want To Be Europe’s Largest But To Become The World’s Number 1

The first quarter results that Volkswagen has obtained is exactly what Porsche Chief Executive Wendelin Wiedeking has expected it would be when he opted to increase his controlling stake in Europe’s largest automaker. The operating profit that Volkswagen—Europe’s largest automaker and manufacturer of top-of-the-line VW Beetle Part– has gained for the first three months of 2007 has increase to 81 percent or $1.48 billion creating a 4.1 percent margin. The profit after tax of $1.0 billion has increased by 127 percent.

The VW brand division was the dominating brand for the first quarter sales drive but the star performers were Audi and Skoda. The soaring sales of new models at the Czech-based Skoda have been able to deliver an 8.5 percent operating margin—surpassing even the premium auto maker BMW. Skoda’s car sales increase by 15.5 percent in the first quarter resulting from its sales of Octavia compact and Roomster station wagon.

Nissan To Unveil New Livina Variant

The Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., earlier announced its intention to unveil a second variant from its new family of global cars. The unveiling of the new car will happen at the Auto Shanghai 2007. The auto show is scheduled to happen from April 22 up until the 28th.

The new Livina, which will be introduced in China in late April, is expected to boost the standing of the automaker in the territory. The vehicle will go on sale in China in late April. After that, it will be gradually offered to other territories around the globe.

Audi to Expand Business in the US

German car makers have been known for their production of luxury cars. Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW are known the world over for their production of luxurious vehicles.

In the past, Audi was shadowed by BMW and Mercedes-Benz in terms of sales. This trend though looks to be turning, with Audi now staking its claim as the fastest German luxury car maker.

Talks Between Volkswagen and Proton Progressing Well

In the news: Volkswagen, Europe’s largest automaker and producer of the popular brand of VW clutch parts including various VW clutch disc— has released some statements saying that its partnership with Malaysia’s Proton Holdings Bhd is already at its “fairly advanced” stage . The automaker also added that the ongoing talks between them and Proton are part of the company’s plan of expanding its market in Southeast Asia. According to Kevin Rose, Volkswagen’s head of international sales in an interview, “Both parties clearly know what they would want from such an agreement.” He also said that the company will try to “work within” the Malaysian government’s set deadline which will end on March 31, 2007.

Still in connection to its sales expansion program, Volkswagen has also added production plants in two of the fastest growing economies in the world—India and China. The main objective of VW is to boost its sales of its Passat and Jetta models in these two countries. It should be noted that Proton has again reported last month its biggest quarterly loss for the last eight years and has been continuously losing market share to its other overseas rivals including Toyota Motor Corporation. It also needs some new technology and designs to become competitive.
